Toronto’s Hidden Infrastructure

Vast infrastructure networks underpin the flows of water, sewage, electricity, stormwater, and natural gas that circulate throughout the city. Yet most Torontonians know little about these systems. This presentation exposes some of Toronto’s hidden infrastructure, arguing that an awareness of them is crucial to better understanding our surroundings.

Software Wrote My Thesis and I Wrote the Software

This presentation is based on my master’s thesis, “The Social Transmission of Online Memes.” Memes are cultural replicators that pass from person to person, sometimes mutating along the way. This talk, however, discusses the writing of that paper.

“Vive la Vélorution!”: Le Monde à Bicyclette and the Origins of Cycling Advocacy in Quebec

In 1975, Le Monde à Bicyclette (MAB), Canada’s first major urban cycling advocacy group, was founded in Montreal. Inspired by the environmental and municipal reform movements, counterculture, and the example of American cycling activists, the MAB imagined transforming Montreal into a greener, safer, and more democratic city through mass adoption of the bicycle: a vélorution. This paper explores the MAB’s history, ideas, and tactics.
